Blitzboks secure fifth in Perth

Tristan Leyds scored his third try of the weekend and set up another to help the Blitzboks beat France to finish fifth at the Perth Sevens on Sunday.

Having been knocked out by Fiji in the cup quarter-finals, the Springbok Sevens ended their Perth Sevens tournament in style with a clinical performance earning a 24-5 victory in the fifth-place playoff.

The Blitzboks will drop down from second to third on the overall standings, with Fiji and Ireland set to contest the third-place playoff.

After a sleepy start against France, an intercept try from Shilton van Wyk kicked the Blitzboks into action, with Leyds dotting down in the corner to bring up a 12-0 lead at half time.

Leyds, playing in his debut tournament, turned provider as he won a breakdown turnover in the first play of the second half, before putting captain Selvyn Davids over the tryline.

A wonderfully-weighted floating pass from Davids found Donovan Don out wide to extend the lead to 24 points. France did hit back in the last two minutes for what turned out to be a consolation try.

The Blitzboks will have a month’s break, before returning to action in the Vancouver Sevens between 23 and 25 February.
